Ahead of the race, he asked if he had feelings of wanting to take revenge. “No, not necessarily. It is a race I want to win in my career anyway. So, I think I had a lot of bad luck last year in the race here with that crash early in the race and then chasing for a long time," Evenepoel said in words to
Het Laatste Nieuws this Friday.
He leads the German team who should also have Gianni Vermeersch and Tim van Dijke supporting him, two riders who've had tremendous spring campaigns. “So it’s not necessarily that I’m starting here with feelings of revenge, but certainly with a lot of motivation to try and win the race".
This Sunday
Wout Van Aert won Paris-Roubaix, and after making his debut in the cobbled monuments in Flanders, a potential debut in the Hell of the North is on the table. But before passion was work, and this Sunday wasn't spent on the TV for the Olympic Champion.
“Honestly, no, because I had six or seven hours of training myself that day. So I spent longer on my bike than those guys that day," he joked. However he could later on catch up with the action. “It was super fun to see how Wout could win this. Our team was very good again too".
"When you also see how Mathieu was riding around, that was phenomenal of course, being so far behind and still finishing within five or ten seconds. So, it was a race full of bad luck and all sorts of side issues. So, it was spectacular to be able to see the highlights afterwards".
Will Evenepoel race Roubaix in 2027? “I don't know yet. I think that will be discussed and, possibly, some kind of recon or something like that will be planned. But I don't think that is known right now, of course," he responds.
