After not being able to participate at the UAE Tour after a great run of form in Oman where he took two stage wins, bad luck continues to haunt Fernando Gaviria as on his return to racing he has crashed out with a broken collarbone which is set to take him off the team's lineup for some more time.
The team shared the news, saying "Unfortunately after a crash earlier today in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad we can confirm Fernando Gaviria has a displaced clavicular fracture and will undergo surgery." Gaviria was in the middle of the peloton in a crucial section of the race when a crash took down some riders with 40 kilometers to go. Gaviria was the only one who stayed on the ground and holding onto his shoulder, it became quickly apparent that it could have been a collarbone break.
UAE Team Emirates went on to have Matteo Trentin finish the race in seventh place, and will likely be leading the team in the cobbled classics this spring. Gaviria was set to ride these, alongside a likely return to Milano-Sanremo, but his plans may very well change with this injury that will require some time off the bike in a crucial preparation phase of the year.
