Tim Merlier ahead of Paris-Roubaix 2026
The 2026 Tour de Hongrie kicks off on Wednesday, May 13th, boasting a strong startlist that features seven World Tour teams. Star riders such as Tim Merlier, Luke Plapp, Jakob Söderqvist and Benoît Cosnefroy are set to take to the line for an exciting race.
Soudal - Quickstep hoping that sprint leader Merlier can continue his successful return from injury in Hungary. The 33-year-old Belgian has already won high-profile races in Scheldeprijs and Ronde van Limburg among just four race days in 2026 - with Tour de Hongrie representing his first stage race of the season.
With three of the five stages featuring relatively flat finales, and just the first a completely flat route, Merlier will have plenty of competition as in-form riders like Luke Plapp and Benoît Cosnefroy eye victory. Elsewhere, riders to watch include Söderqvist, Mike Teunissen, Phil Bauhaus and Paul Double while former three-time Hungarian champion Attila Valter is set to start his home race - which he also won in 2020.

Last month, it was confirmed Bálint Makrai, representing MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort, returned a positive out-of-competition doping test. Race organisers promptly excluded but then reinstated the team despite the pending doping investigation.
