The 2025 edition of La Vuelta a Espana is rapidly shaping up as the next major battleground for the sport’s elite Grand Tour contenders. With Tadej Pogacar confirmed absent, the spotlight falls firmly on Jonas Vingegaard, who now stands as the outright favourite to claim the red jersey. The Danish powerhouse from Team Visma | Lease a Bike will be targeting his maiden Vuelta triumph, which would mark his third Grand Tour victory overall, having already secured back-to-back Tour de France titles in 2022 and 2023.
However, the path to glory will be anything but straightforward. Vingegaard faces a host of formidable challengers already confirmed on the start list, with Portuguese talent João Almeida and Spanish rising star Juan Ayuso widely regarded as his principal threats. Both riders have shown promising Grand Tour potential, and their presence ensures the fight for the overall honours will be fiercely contested.
UAE Team Emirates will line up with a dual leadership strategy, fielding Pogacar’s long-time lieutenant alongside Almeida in a bid to rebalance the Grand Tour win ledger in 2025. Meanwhile, Team Visma – Lease a Bike, after Simon Yates’ Giro d’Italia victory earlier this year, will look to add the Vuelta to their haul. UAE, of course, will be aiming to defend their Tour crown, with Pogacar seeking a record-breaking fourth title (2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025).
Expect an intense and tactical battle from the outset. This year’s route is notably mountainous, with relentless elevation gain poised to sap the riders’ strength and keep the general classification tightly contested. But according to La Vuelta race director Javier Guillén, one stage stands above the rest in its potential to decide the race.
Stage 18, unveiled last Wednesday in Valladolid, will be a pivotal 27.2-kilometre individual time trial. Almost completely flat, the course is long enough to create meaningful time gaps ahead of the closing days, likely reshuffling the standings and testing the GC contenders’ time-trialling prowess under pressure.
"This Vuelta will be decided in Valladolid," Guillén declared unequivocally. "Stage 18 is crucial — a decisive battleground."

The Quest for Stage Glory

Beyond its significance for the overall standings, the time trial will be a marquee event for specialists. Preceded by a team time trial, where victory will go to the best collective unit, the individual effort will be a prime opportunity for the likes of Filippo Ganna — the reigning time trial world champion — and Iván Romeo, should he line up, to stake their claim.
For cycling fans, the combination of steep climbs, tactical battles, and this late-stage test against the clock promises a gripping finale to what is already shaping up to be one of the most compelling Grand Tours in recent memory.
