Soren Waerenskjold is one of the biggest emerging talents in the peloton, a time-trial specialist with strong leadout capacity, he was a valuable target for several teams including UAE Team Emirates, however he refused the offer to stay with home team Uno-X Pro Cycling Team.
“You are tempted. I know that Norwegians are not such a fan of the Emirates and such. Of course that played a part in my decision. You would rather make the morally and ethically right choice, and not put the salary above everything else," the under-23 time-trial World Champion told TV2. Waerenskjold turned pro with Joker Fuel of Norway in 2019 and moved to Uno-X in 2021. His talent was clear as he won two out of the three stages he raced at the Tour de l'Avenir that year.
In 2022, combining Elite with under-23 level racing, he scored several wins, culminating with the victory in Wollongong. He's wearing his team's jersey in the time-trials this year at Elite level, and he's succeeded already in the Baloise Belgium Tour and national championships, showing great form ahead of his Tour de France debut. The Norwegian team is building a strong team which already sees them at the Grand Boucle, and the 23-year old is keen on persisting with the team and it's evolution.
“So it was easy to accept. It's also nice to be part of an emerging team. When they started in 2017, it was a small team. This year we will ride the Tour de France for the first time. It's great to be part of that development. The selection will probably be further strengthened next year," he concluded.
