A crash with six kilometers was perhaps the most damaging for the race's overall classification so far. Steff Cras, 13th in the GC, was forced to abandon and talked about the crash being caused by a fan. Simon Yates and Mikel Landa were also involved, without major injuries but shedding 47 seconds on the line, descending to sixth and 14th in the overall classification after this time loss.
Dylan Groenewegen sprinted to fourth with a surprising performance however it was a bad day for the Australian team, who now also need to take into consideration Yates' health coming into stage 9 where the riders go up to Puy de Dôme and the GC riders will be put to the test once again.
