INEOS Grenadiers seems to be losing a loyal pawn in Luke Rowe. The 34-year-old Briton will retire as a cyclist at the end of this season following an injury that altered his original plan to hang up the bike together with mate Geraint Thomas only after 2025. Apparently Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale secured the experienced road captain's services for next season.
That is what journalist Daniel Benson reports on his website. The imminent departure of Rowe is remarkable, since he is seen as one of the culture guardians within the team. Rowe has been racing for the team since his debut as a professional in 2012. Rowe is certainly not the first to leave the INEOS ship.
According to Benson, there has been speculation about his future for weeks. Initially, Rowe was supposed to step into the INEOS Grenadiers team car in 2025, but the road captain is now reportedly opting for a new adventure in the service of Decathlon AG2R.
Rowe was unavailable for comment, but according to Benson he will soon be presented as the newest team manager of the French team that includes Benoît Cosnefroy, Sam Bennett and Oliver Naesen.
