Stage 6 of the
Tour of Guangxi had some more climbing and it featured some interesting action, however the outcome of the day was the same as every single other sprint stage in the Chinese race, with
Paul Magnier leading the way through the finish line for the final World Tour race day of the season.
Paul Double confirmed the overall win in the meantime despite having his jersey at risk on the climbs.
The final stage of the race featured a five-lap circuit in Nanning which had a 1-kilometer gap at 11.5%, which allowed for attacks and would make it a day with a slightly different dynamic than the other regular sprint stages. The breakaway of the day was initially formed by Ewen Costiou, Léandre Lozquet, Reuben Thompson, Clément Davy and Nans Peters who is retiring from cycling today.
With 20 kilometers to go on the final ascent Costiou attacked in the front however the breakaway was also caught and then Victor Lafay from behind launched an attack and with power, managed to drop the competition including race leader Paul Double, creating a very stressful situation for the Briton. However the climb wouldn't last long and after the climb there was a chase on flat and straight roads in which any solo attack would be hard to succeed.
He was caught with 12 kilometers to go and at the same time a few groups had been linking up to the main peloton, forming a large group that headed towards the finish with an inevitable sprint on the menu. There were a few attacks inbetween however we saw a fast finale, Patrick Eddy launching his sprint first followed by Ivo Oliveira, but the fastest men in the end came through and Paul Magnier, without a leadout, managed to outsprint the competition once again to take his fifth win out of six in the race.
