Kim Heiduk had started the stage in the race lead, with the overall classification tightly packed before the 166km route from Dison to Eupen. The Netcompany INEOS rider began the day three seconds ahead of Jordi Meeus, Ben Oliver and Pithie, after Pithie’s Stage 3 victory for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe in Vaux-sur-Sure.
Breakaway caught before final attacks
An eight-rider breakaway formed during the opening half of the stage, with Samuel Florez, Pim Ronhaar, Kristians Belohvosciks, Anton Lennemann, Theo Demarcin, George Wood, Jonah Killy and Robin Kull going clear.
Florez split the break after the halfway point, but the move later came back together before the peloton increased the chase. The escape was caught with 23km remaining, bringing the race back together for the final run-in to Eupen.
Jordi Meeus suffered a flat tyre before the catch but returned to the peloton, keeping Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe represented near the top of the GC fight.
De Lie finishes off fast finale
The final 15km brought a series of late moves. Yorben Lauryssen attacked before being brought back, while Gerben Kuypers also countered from the peloton. Netcompany INEOS worked through Tobias Foss and others as Heiduk’s team tried to control the closing kilometres.
Sheehan then accelerated inside the final 6km, giving the finale its decisive shape. Pithie had a mechanical problem shortly before launching his own move from the peloton with 3.6km remaining, while Lotto Intermarche also moved forward before the final kilometres.
Netcompany INEOS were back on the front inside the final 2.5km, but the stage was no longer fully settled. Sheehan remained in contention as the road opened into the final kilometre, with Pithie also prominent after his late acceleration.
De Lie launched inside the final 500 metres and passed Pithie as the sprint opened, before powering through to take the win ahead of Sheehan. The result gave Lotto Intermarche a stage victory before the final day, while the full stage result and final GC situation will confirm how the tight overall standings changed before Stage 5.
