Stage 11 of the 2026 Giro d'Italia was another day for the breakaway and the winner is no stranger. Jhonatan Narváez has stormed to a third victory at this year's race, his second from a breakaway and UAE Team Emirates - XRG's fourth of the race.
The stage was heavily hinted to be won by the breakaway, but due to the flat start out of Porcari, the formation was heavily battled and it was not easy to form a front group. It took hours of racing, at very high speeds, to make it happen.
17 riders ended up forming the breakaway, riders that attacked at different points in the day. It was a group with a lot of quality however with the likes of Jhonatan Narváez, Christian Scaroni, Enric Mas, Aleksandr Vlasov, Chris Harper, Lennert van Eetvelt and Warren Barguil in front. Vlasov and Nico Denz' presence out front also raised questions over a possible Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe attack. However, the GC riders only aimed to save the day, and there was no GC action, as Afonso Eulálio continued holding the pink jersey in his shoulders.
Inside the final 70 kilometers the race began deciding itself. A 9-kilometer long climb at 6% saw Enric Mas on the attack, with Chris Harper and Jhonatan Narváez following him. However Narváez' lack of collaboration saw other riders coming back from behind in a race that was proving to be quite tactical.
A crash on one of the day's technical descents saw Scaroni, van Eetvelt and Filippo Zana go down, which would come to affect the outcome of the day heavily as all three would then be out of contention. From the breakaway, the action was then saved for the final kilometers.
On the final climb Enric Mas began attacking from early on, taking Narváez with him. Chris Harper and later Aleksandr Vlasov would join, but Mas' repeated accelerations saw them dropped. Without giving a turn in front, the Ecuadorian would follow him and the two went into the descent together.
The outcome in the end would not be overly difficult to foresee, as from the two there was a clear different in sprinting power. Mas launched a strong sprint towards the finish in Chiavari and attempted to surprise, but Narváez' sprint was superior in the end. Diego Ulissi sprinted to third from behind.
