Stage 4 of the Etoile de Besseges was decided by a late surge rather than a full-scale sprint, as Joppe Heremans timed his move perfectly to take victory from a reduced peloton.
An early three-man breakaway of Valentin Retailleau, Tommaso Bessega and Clement Davy animated much of the day, but never gained the kind of margin that forced panic behind. Unibet Rose Rockets assumed responsibility in the bunch, keeping the gap under control as the race moved onto the finishing circuits.
The balance finally shifted inside the final ten kilometres. Bessega was the first to crack and was reeled in, before the remaining attackers were absorbed one by one as the pace lifted. With the break neutralised, multiple teams moved forward in anticipation of a sprint finish, including Decathlon CMA CGM Team, Alpecin-Premier Tech, and Van Rysel Roubaix.
Rather than a long lead-out, the finale turned into a tense game of positioning and hesitation. As the peloton approached the final straight, the speed briefly stalled, opening the door for a late attack.
Heremans took full advantage. Launching his move inside the final kilometre, the Belgian quickly opened a gap that proved decisive. Behind, there was no immediate coordinated response, and although Paul Lapeira and Lukas Kubis led the chase, the line arrived too soon.
Heremans crossed the finish four seconds clear, securing a well-judged victory. Lapeira took second place, with Kubis third, a result that helped the Unibet rider consolidate his position in the overall standings.
Matteo Moschetti, Louis Hardouin, Axel Huens and Mathieu Kockelmann all finished in the same group, as the peloton rolled in fragmented but together.
After a day spent keeping the race under control, the finale underlined how quickly hesitation can be punished at this level. Stage 4 ultimately rewarded timing over raw speed, with Heremans delivering the decisive move when others waited for a sprint that never fully materialised.
