Remco Evenepoel shares post on training accident - Belgian reveals dislocated collarbone and lung contusions as well

Remco Evenepoel was involved in a training accident this Tuesday. In Belgium, whilst out on a solo ride, he could not avoid an opening door from a van and collided head-on, leading to several fractures. The Soudal - Quick-Step rider has now posted about the incident, explaining his injuries and sharing thankfulness for all those involved.

"The comeback starts now. After a scary accident on training yesterday, I underwent surgery last night and everything went well," Evenepoel wrote. "With a fracture to my rib, shoulder blade, hand, contusions to my lungs and a dislocation of my right clavicle which has caused all surrounding ligaments to be torn".

"It's going to be a long journey but I’m fully focused on my recovery and I’m determined to come back stronger, step by step. I’m very grateful for all the help and support I received the last 24 hours. From the emergency services, the neighbours that helped me in the first moment, the medical teams in Anderlecht and Herentals and our team doctor Phil Jansen. Also a special mention for my wife, my family for standing by me in these difficult moments and to everyone for their supportive messages".

This crash comes in a time where it will prevent Evenepoel from riding in the team's training camp and most certainly it will delay the start of his season, as we're looking at at least a few weeks off the bike at best. When he can return to training, and adding intensity, is a complete unknown at this moment and we don't know if it will change the still private Grand Tour schedules for 2025.

Evenepoel also did not share the anger with the van driver, who he seemingly believes was completely accidental, and a matter of bad luck. "I also want to express my support to the woman who was involved in the accident," he concluded.
