Soudal - Quick-Step are having to change plans. They weren't fully defined for Olympic Champion Remco Evenepoel, but his training accident means another few weeks off the bike and quite a few changes to the schedule. Patrick Lefevere has spoken in reaction to the fall, but is thankful that it didn't happen in the middle of the season.
"Of course this is not nice, but fortunately it is December and not April", Lefevere said in words to Het Nieuwsblad. Last year Tadej Pogacar fell at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and then the sub-optimal preparation is largely to blame for his defeat at the Tour de France, whilst Jonas Vingegaard was also affected by his crash this April.
If this had happened in April it would make a Giro d'Italia presence impossible but it would also severely hamper the preparation for the Tour de France. Now in December, it will be a pebble in the shoe of the 24-year old, but not a disaster for the 2025 season.
“Remco had quietly resumed training, with visits to the Formula 1 race in Qatar and a match in Anderlecht in between. Of course, he was far from training à bloc. That was not necessary. We did not yet know exactly where he would start his season, but that will certainly not be Australia," Lefevere adds.
The team will start a training camp this Monday and there are questions on whether he'll make the trip or not. Certainly not on the bike, but even for photoshoot or equipment fitting for example it's likely not possible to do what's planned. “That is the first practical obstacle. Can he fly, does he want to fly, is it appropriate for him to fly? That training camp is about training, but also about many practical matters such as photo shoots. It goes without saying that his fall will disrupt a lot".
The comeback starts now.
