Remco Evenepoel has kicked off his second part of the season at the
Tour of Norway and it has been a successful run as he won his second stage out of three. The
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team rider stormed to the win on the queen stage of the race today and is back in the yellow jersey.
“It was a long day due to the headwind at the start of the stage, but also towards the final climb. However, Kasper Asgreen kept me perfectly out of the wind and in the first part. It's always nice when a winner of the Tour of Flanders does that for you," Evenepoel said after the stage. With the echelons that formed yesterday, there were never truly calm moments in the peloton today on the road, however it was all to be decided in the summit finish of Gaustatoppen.
I'm really proud that I was able to finish it. That's good for the team. It is also a nice lead to have towards the coming days," he pointed out satisfied. He matched the early moves on the final ascent, and consistently rode at a high pace that saw him distance every single rider on the climb.
“When I was in the lead with Jay Vine and Luke Plapp in my wheel, there was a headwind. That was difficult, but the moment I rode away there was a tailwind again. I used the wind to my advantage, to make it difficult for the other guys. I wasn't sure in the final, so I decided to pedal a little harder. I really wanted to reach the finish with a big lead. It was a long and arduous effort," the 22-year old explained.
“I have a pretty big lead now, which is good. However, the local circuits in Norway are always treacherous and technical. Anyway, of course it's better to be in the lead now," he concluded. With form on his side and experience in the hilly stages that lie ahead, it won't be easy to distance Evenepoel, as he seeks further stage-racing glory for his strong season up to date.
