In an interview in Andorra with Lanterne Rouge colleagues, Remco Evenepoel half-confirmed that he will remain with Soudal Quick-Step next season and called for the team to be reinforced. And he speaks of having already signed "a big name," referring to Mikel Landa, whom he lavishes with praise.
Remco is demanding and not only praises the arrival of Landa, but also sends a message to Patrick Lefevere to continue reinforcing the team with more names. "I am very happy that he is coming. There were more names, big names. Also Sivakov and De Plus, yes. It didn't work out, so at that time I was a bit disappointed. With those two you can go to war. I thought we missed our chance."
The world time trial champion insists Landa is exceptional, but wants more for his trio ahead of the 2024 season:
"But Landa is a rider who knows how to win grand tours with his team. He's 33 years old now. I think he's not too old. He's a good rider who brings a lot of experience to a young team. I think it was the best move Patrick could have made this year. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect one more rider, one that's just below Landa's level. A rider between the level of Ilan (Van Wilder, ed.), Vervaecke and Cattaneo. But it's hard to find a rider in that category. They are expensive."
The young Belgian, who believes his team for the flat is closed, hopes that Mikel will be his Sepp Kuss in 2024:
"We have Asgreen, Lampaert, ... On that terrain I'm not worried at all. Then it's just a matter of finding the balance between the strong climbers, the pure climbers and the real masters, the Sepp Kuss type. Hopefully we've found that rider with Landa. I really believe he can do it. I think his best years were when he was racing as a domestique, when he was helping Froome."
