Australian Paralympic cycling champion Paige Greco has passed away at the age of 28 following what her family described as an unexpected medical episode at her home in Adelaide on Sunday. The news was formally announced in a statement released via AusCycling.
Greco, one of the defining figures of Australia’s modern para-sport movement, rose to international prominence at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where she claimed Australia’s first medal with gold in the 3,000-metre individual pursuit (C1-C3), setting a new world record in the process, before adding two further bronze medals in the road events. Her achievements were officially recognised in 2022 with the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Greco’s family described her as the “heart of the home”, highlighting her determination, kindness and impact on those around her, while extending gratitude for the messages of support received. Paralympics Australia and AusCycling also paid tribute, with senior figures from both organisations acknowledging the inspirational legacy she leaves on and off the bike.
Before transitioning fully to para-cycling, Greco competed in para-athletics and attempted to qualify for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Although she narrowly missed out, the setback prompted her move to Adelaide, where she trained at the South Australian Sports Institute while completing university studies in sports science.
A career that shaped a new era in Australian para-sport
Greco made her international para-cycling debut in 2019 and quickly established herself as a multiple world medallist and record-breaker on both track and road. In 2025, she added two more bronze medals — one in the World Cup and another at the Road World Championships, both held in Belgium.
Paige Greco leaves behind a legacy defined by excellence, resilience, humility and influence far beyond medals alone. May she rest in peace.
From all associated with CyclingUpToDate, will send our deep and heartfelt condolences to all who knew her.
