Out of the Top10 and a UCI points fine - Remco Evenepoel leaves Montréal road race worlds more than empty handed

Remco Evenepoel was one of the main favourites to win the Montréal World Championships men's elite road race but could only manage 12th in a race where chaos ruled. The Belgian rider was not able to crack the Top10 and after the finish, was also fined heavily.
The Canadian race gave way to extraordinary racing and amongst the headliners was Evenepoel. Last year's runner-up was one of the first big favourites to get dropped, but made several comebacks during the race and was also on the attack in the final laps of the race - trying to seek out Brandon McNulty and the rainbow jersey.
In the end he was not able to, and came home with a 12th place to his name. After the race, Evenepoel was fined 500 Swiss Francs and 25 UCI points after having disposted waste outside the designated litter zones.
However Evenepoel was not the only rider to be punished. Biniam Girmay and Henok Mulubrhan, part of the day's breakaway, were both fined just as much due to their use of trade team vests with the national selection equipment. Guatemala's Manuel Rodas was also heavily penalized after using a non-compliant position on the bike.

Over the course of his career, he has conducted approximately 100 interviews across road cycling and cyclocross, ranging from one-to-one conversations and online formats to press conferences and on-site pre- and post-race coverage. His interviews include leading riders, team managers, and prominent figures within cycling media: Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Mathieu van der Poel, Primoz Roglic, Wout van Aert, Joao Almeida and Tom Pidcock; managers like Patrick Lefevere and Joxean Matxin; and YouTube personality Bryan Kennedy (BKXC)...

- How much was this podium a Pogačar podium, even in his absence? A loyal domestique deservedly wins it after the 1-2 they shared on this circuit. In second is a great friend and training partner who helped Pogačar get to winning MSR. In third is the friend who is the second best monuments winner of this generation, the race rival who has made Pogačar better and better. - With a strategy of following every del Toro move, he placed his fate in the hands of another - and the way the race unfolded was very much because of their 1-2 just two weeks ago on this circuit. His cramps are to me a sign of youth and inexperience (was this his longest ever race?), his disappointment shows how much of a human being he is, what pride he has, and what responsibility he feels toward honoring his team’s work as their leader. - The most important sentence here is where he ran out of energy when he and Pidcock were so tantalizingly close. Had he been able to take a pull, able to push that one little bit harder, the two of them likely would have reached McNulty and the trio would have possibly ended up on the podium. Instead, chase group politics happened, as they always do in these situations. He tried, and like so many others the legs gave out at the wrong time. Such is racing.RidesHills28-09-2026
