Italian rider Sergio Meris finished as the top performer for Unibet Rose Rockets at this year's Milan-San Remo, crossing the line in 50th place. While the team successfully brought all seven of their riders to the finish line on the Via Roma, they missed out on the early breakaway and played a quiet role in the explosive finale dominated by Tadej Pogacar.
Although finishing the grueling Monument is an achievement in itself, the Unibet Rose Rockets struggled to make a tactical impact on the race's defining moments. Meris finished over three minutes behind the victorious Pogacar, while team leaders Lukas Kubis and Clément Venturini crossed the line in a large trailing group nearly four minutes down on the frontrunners.
“Our longest day in the saddle was not our best day,” the team honestly concluded on social media after the dust had settled in San Remo.
Despite the tough day out for the squad, 25-year-old Tomas Kopecky found the silver lining. Crossing the line in 107th place, he enjoyed the experience of racing one of cycling's most historic events and acknowledged the steep learning curve for the developing team.
“It was a super beautiful race,” Kopecky reflected. “I was where I needed to be. I can only be happy with my performance. But we still have a lot to learn.”
