Kiaan Watts has been handed a 25-day suspension by the UCI after striking Marijn Maas during the Salverda Ster van Zwolle, an incident that unfolded mid-race and prompted immediate disciplinary action from both officials and his team.
With just over 30 kilometres remaining in the Dutch one-day race, the NSN Development rider moved to the front of the peloton before lashing out at BEAT Cycling Club p/b Saxo rider Maas. The moment, captured on camera, stood in stark contrast to the usual flow of a race still building towards its finale.
Watts later said he believed Maas had spat at him beforehand, a claim the Dutch rider denied, but the reaction left little room for interpretation once seen by race officials.

Immediate action followed by UCI sanction

The response during the race was decisive. Watts was disqualified on the spot, fined 200 Swiss francs and penalised 25 UCI points, while NSN Development moved quickly to withdraw him from competition the following day at the Dorpenomloop Rucphen.
That sequence has now been followed by formal UCI action. The governing body confirmed a 25-day suspension, running from 9 April to 2 May 2026, noting that Watts has acknowledged the offence and accepted the sanction.

A rare but serious breach of conduct

While tensions in the peloton are nothing new, physical altercations remain highly unusual, particularly given the risks involved at race speed. Even a single moment of contact has the potential to affect far more than the riders directly involved.
That broader context helps explain the swift and layered response, from immediate disqualification through to a governing body ban that brings the matter to a close.
For Watts, the sanction represents more than just time away from racing. At development level, where progression often depends as much on professionalism as performance, incidents like this tend to carry longer-term weight.
