The final stage unfolded as expected, with the early break neutralised before the decisive climb and the race reduced to a select group of favourites.
Yates remained composed throughout the finale, allowing his team to manage the pace before taking responsibility himself on the climb. “It’s a tough climb, short but explosive. The gradients weren’t extreme, but with the wind it wasn’t easy,” he said after the finish. “I tried to keep everything under control and keep the pace high. That’s why I went to the front and rode my own tempo.”
That approach ensured the race never drifted out of control, even as attacks came in the closing kilometres. When the decisive move came, Yates was able to respond and stay with his closest rivals, limiting any potential time losses. “The feeling on the cobbles wasn’t great, I struggled a bit. But in the end I held on to the overall victory, so that’s what matters.”
From race control to Giro focus
While the stage victory went elsewhere, the overall result was never seriously in doubt once Yates had established his advantage earlier in the race.
His margin over Jorgen Nordhagen and Alessandro Pinarello was protected without panic on the final day, underlining the control he maintained throughout the decisive moments of the race. “The race overall was really nice, and winning the general classification is important, so I’m happy,” he said.
More telling, however, was where his focus shifted immediately after securing the title. “Now I’ll go back to altitude training to prepare for the Giro. We’ll have several options there, the important thing will be to arrive with the right legs and the right condition.”

A week that builds momentum
Yates leaves Galicia not only with the overall victory, but with a performance that reinforces his position heading into the next phase of the season. The combination of a stage win earlier in the race and a controlled GC triumph suggests a rider building form at the right time, particularly with the demands of the Giro d’Italia approaching.
With João Almeida also expected to feature in the team’s plans, UAE Team Emirates - XRG will arrive with multiple options. But Yates’ performance at O
Gran Camiño has already ensured his name will be central to that conversation.
For now, the result stands as both a confirmation and a signal: the form is there, the approach is clear, and the next target has already been set.
