A strong move featuring riders including Gorka Sorarrain, Sinuhe Fernandez, Diego Uriarte and Rafael Reis shaped the early part of the stage, at one point building an advantage of close to two minutes.
However, with none of the riders posing a threat on the general classification, the peloton remained composed, gradually increasing the tempo as the race approached the decisive climbs. The turning point came on the second ascent of Alto da Valga, where sustained work from Movistar Team began to dismantle the break.
Race explodes on Alto da Valga
As the pace intensified, the race split under pressure. Attacks from George Bennett and Jan Castellon further stretched the field, but neither move was allowed to fully develop as the GC teams asserted control.
By the summit, the breakaway had been reduced and then neutralised, with a select group of favourites forming ahead of the descent. The run-in to the final climb saw a brief tactical phase, with Castellón making one last attempt to go clear before being reeled back by Carlos Canal.
Behind, the key contenders regrouped, with Team Visma | Lease a Bike and UAE Team Emirates XRG both positioning their leaders. Notably, Ivan Romeo, after earlier support, was left without teammates for the decisive phase, while his rivals retained assistance heading into the final climb.
The decisive climb to Monte Santa Trega began with Kevin Vermaerke setting a fierce tempo for UAE, quickly reducing the group to the strongest riders. Yates remained composed throughout, marking the key moves as the group was whittled down to a select handful of contenders.
Pinarello wins stage as Yates secures GC
Inside the final two kilometres, Yates launched an acceleration in an attempt to distance his rivals, but Jorgen Nordhagen, Alessandro Pinarello and Ivan Romeo all held firm.
That left a four-man group to decide the stage in the final kilometre, where Pinarello proved fastest to take victory ahead of Nordhagen and Yates, with Romeo finishing fourth.
While he missed out on the stage win, Yates’ ride was enough to secure the overall title, confirming the dominance he established on the queen stage and bringing O
Gran Camiño to a controlled conclusion.
