Vincenzo Nibali is on his final season in the peloton, and ever since announcing his departure from the peloton he has put on a series of impressive performances that remind of his very best. Today in Torino he was in the fight for the stage win after an aggressive performance.

“The day has turned out to be a tough one, because the pace proposed by Bora was a very high one. Also, it was a very hot day, and it was quite challenging to eat and drink on a nervous and tricky circuit in Turin," he said. Nibali was within the front split of the peloton, and then thrived in the heat, putting in attacks at Superga and Colle della Maddalena in the final lap, to put distance into some of his rivals. "The pace of the race was very high both on the climbs and on the descents, so it was really tough”

He collaborated with Richard Carapaz and Jai Hindley to put time into the riders he distanced in the final steep ramps, adding to the time gained on several riders who didn't even feature in the front split. Nibali rose from 13th to 8th in the general classification, within three minutes of Richard Carapaz. Whether he will be capable of fighting for a Top5 or podium will depend on his performances in the coming week, however it is fully possible taking into consideration the massive differences that can be made.

“Yes, I am quite satisfied with the stage. I’d like to fight for a stage win, but I knew it would be difficult. I lost some time on Etna, but I was still there, and I knew, that the rivals consider me as a dangerous rider for the GC, while to win from a small group of favorites is always hard," Nibali concluded. Tomorrow in Cogne he will have another test, where the prospects of a stage win and an ascent in the overall classification should motivate 'the shark' to attack.
