It seems inevitable that upon the end of his Soudal - Quick-Step contract, Julian Alaphilippe will break free from Patrick Lefevere and find a new home. Long rumoured to be interested in the Frenchman, TotalEnergies team boss Jean-René Bernadeau has confirmed talks are underway.
"We met with Julian last week and negotiations have begun," Bernaudeau revealed in conversation with the Ouest-France newspaper and the TotalEnergies boss seems confident too. "I like his state of mind. He really wants to perform well and works hard without making noise."
Alaphilippe is out of action currently after revealing that he'd been riding the majority of this year's Classics season with a fractured fibula, too worried about the potentially negative reaction to admit his injury during the races. "He is of course disappointed that his fibula injury has affected his spring, but he continues to keep the faith," Bernaudeau insists.
Alaphilippe has raced the entirety of his career so far with Soudal - Quick-Step in their various incarnations. The Frenchman has had some real highs two with six Tour de France stage wins, two World Championships and a monument win at Milano-Sanremo on his palmares amongst many other triumphs. In recent seasons however, he has struggled with injury and form, leading Patrick Lefevere to publicly criticise his rider via the press on many occasions, meaning a split is likely necessary at the end of this season.

This is going to be interesting to watch if it comes about. He is pressured now and he will have pressure on him to win again in a new team. Different pressure for sure, and hopefully it will be pressure that is constructive and beneficial to him.

I think that this will be a great move for Julian. I just hope that he's more successful there than Peter Sagan was.

Sagan, amazing to think he’s still only 34.

Kind of went downhill fast (pun intended) suddenly.

I know at some point he was earning as much as Tadej now, surprised how quickly he quit.

There is not much of a history of over 30s cyclists changing teams that seem to work out. Anyone care to name some of the success stories?

Cavendish comes to mind. Are there any others though? Roglic's story is yet to be written but seems to be a likely candidate. Watch this space as they say. Edit; Sean Kelly was 35 or 36 when he moved to Lotus Festina and won Milan San emo in 1992 aged 36. Different times that really cant be compared to the way modern racing is done.

Ah yes, forgot about him :-)

Roglic will probably still manage a few exploits, certainly doesn’t seem ready to let go.

MvdP is holed up, can’t see WVA moving on.

Yes times have changed, teams prefer taking cheaper risks with youngsters than expensive ones with the ageing.

Sagan was like 34 something?

His career, kind of went 360° degrees downhill (no pun intended) south.

Surprised to hear how quickly he quit, despite given the fact he earning as much as Pogi does at some point.

Sadly, there aren't much history of cyclists over the age of 30, changing teams that seems to work out for them.

Hope Julian gets all the support he needs in his new team, that was sadly lacking at Quickstep 🤐🤞🏻

Hope he does not suffer this toxic drama ever again🤐🙄. Thanks to Lefevere, who turn his stind at Quickstep tough to watch😡

Taking a long time but that’s about the most logical and efficient deal for all.

If he ends up underperforming, they’ll use his public appeal (not on the same level as TP’s) for TotalEnergies marketing and PR to pay off the investment.

PL will have to find someone else to blame for the future lack of results which won’t return so quick the way things are there.
