Movistar set to lose Alex Aranburu but throws all cards into renewing with Oier Lazkano

In the last weeks of the cycling market, Movistar Team has been working on trying to renew with Oier Lazkano, whose contract expires at the end of the 2024 season. The Spanish team has it complicated, as it competes with several of the strongest teams in the World Tour peloton, and that have confirmed their interest in the 24-year-old rider, as BORA - hansgrohe and Soudal Quick-Step.

Now, according to new information from AS, Movistar has decided to get serious about Lazkano's renewal. From the upper echelons of the Spanish team's main sponsor they have decided to get active to try to match the offers he will receive from other projects such as BORA (and Red Bull).

It is clear that much of Movistar Team's future depends on the team being able to retain Oier Lazkano. The reigning Spanish road cycling champion has had a great 2024 so far, winning the Clásica Jaén Paraíso Interior and giving a remarkable performance in the spring classics, at times competing head to head against the likes of Mathieu van der Poel.

Aranburu will go to France

On the other hand, as we already mentioned, there is no option to renew Alex Aranburu. It is known that he will normally end up in a French team. According to our sources, Cofidis sounds like the next destination for the 28-year-old, who recently came within centimeters of a great victory for Movistar Team in Eschborn-Frankfurt.

Obviously, this is a disappointment for Movistar, as Aranburu is the rider who has accumulated the most UCI points for the team this season. Aranburu is by far one of the most important men in that sense considering the critical situation in the classification.
