The Vuelta a España 2024 is in its first week, but with the main candidates for the general classification very well defined after the first 5 stages. Primoz Roglic is the big favorite alongside current red jersey Ben O'Connor, followed by Enric Mas, João Almeida, Antonio Tiberi and Mikel Landa, among others...
However, in statements made to MARCA colleagues, despite the fact that Mas is in a golden opportunity to fight for the victory in La Vuelta after being on the verge of it on 3 occasions, Eusebio Unzué - general manager of Movistar Team - has been surprisingly cautious with the objective regarding the Balearic rider.
"At the moment we are with the idea of the Top 5," explains Unzué, after pointing out what are the sensations of his cyclist in the first days. "He has arrived well. The Vuelta is the race where he has always performed best, and he is confident."
Eusebio Unzué does not trust such an open line-up
The fact of not aiming high and currently settling for a Top 5 overall for Enric Mas is because, as Eusebio Unzué continues to point out, the rivalry is wide open and there are many threats to Movistar Team: "We are aware that, except for the three greats of this sport (Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel, ed.), everyone else is here. It's going to be a very open competition until the end."
