Merckx, Hinault, Contador... - Jonas Vingegaard's win in pink sees him join exclusive list of legends on yet another achievement

Tadej Pogacar has become the new benchmark in pro cycling, however in recent times Jonas Vingegaard has been putting in big steps towards making a legacy. He is set to become a winner of all three Grand Tours before the World Champion; and has this Tuesday become only the fifth rider in history to win a stage of each Grand Tour whilst leading it.

History in the making, as it turns out that Jonas Vingegaard has joined an incredibly small and prestigious list. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider has won the summit finishes to Blockhaus at first and took over the KOM jersey at the Corsa Rosa. At Corno alle Scale and Pila he won the stages with the maglia azzurra on his shoulders, however not in the race lead as Afonso Eulálio carried it all throughout these mountain stages.

Only on stage 15 did Vingegaard show up to the start in pink, with three mountain stages remaining where he could make the difference and win with the maglia rosa. On the first opportunity, this Tuesday's summit finish in Carì, Vingegaard did it.

Jonas Vingegaard has won the Tour de France on two occasions and has previously won stages in it whilst wearing the yellow jersey. Similarly, last summer in Spain the Dane managed to win whilst wearing the red jersey. These are two Grand Tours he's won, and aside from aiming to complete his list of Grand Tour triumphs; he has also won stages whilst leading all five.

Only five riders in the sport's history have done so previously, according to ProCyclingStats: Eddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens, Bernard Hinault and Alberto Contador.

This Sunday, Vingegaard could become the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours throughout his career. He would join Merckx and Hinault once again; legends of the past such as Jacques Anquetil and Felice Gimondi; and modern stars such as Contador himself, Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome.
