Much was made prior to the start of the 2023
Tour de France of the close bond between
Jasper Philipsen and
Mathieu van der Poel and how it could aid the pair in sprint finishes. It seems those predictions were correct as stage 3 went perfectly to plan for
Alpecin-Deceuninck.
"In the second stage I wanted to save as much energy as possible, because I knew that this third stage could be very tough," says van der Poel post-stage. "In the first sprinters stage, it is always very hectic. Especially because everyone still has good legs. It is then difficult to create differences, but I think we showed a perfect lead-out."
In the final kilometre, a brilliant leadout from van der Poel set up Philipsen perfectly for victory. After being uncharacteristically quiet on the opening two stages, van der Poel also hints at being more proactive for his own goals now he's helped Philipsen get his stage win.

"Fortunately, the round lasts three weeks and there are still plenty of opportunities for me. In any case, I am happy that we as a team have already won this victory. It will be difficult to guide Jasper forward in such a way again. But of course, we're doing our very best again," he concludes, referencing stage 4.
