During the Tour, he outlined his desire to ride the championships and even use a World Cup participation to sharpen the tools. He will also battle with Tom Pidcock in the discipline.
Last year, Van der Poel finished 29th at the World Championships in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. The Elite Men's Mountain bike cross-country race is scheduled for August 30th in Val di Sole, Italy.

“After the Tour, the full focus goes to mountain biking. I’ll then have about a month to prepare myself for the World Championships.
"Normally, I’ll do one more World Cup race, just like last year in Les Gets [August 23, ed.], and then it’s on to the World Championships.”
When it comes to the road, a participation at the Canadian WorldTour one-day races of GP de Québec and GP de Montréal on September 11th and 13th are on the cards, followed by potentially the World Championships Elite Men's race on September 27th.

The Dutchman was in top shape at the end of the Tour de France as he emptied the tank to hold off the sprinters in a nail-biting finale, dropping Tadej Pogacar in a sprint to the line in the process.
"I think everyone has seen before that I can go very deep in a finish," Van der Poel told NOS. "I have said it a few times already, but this was maybe the deepest I have ever gone."
Him and the Slovenian built a solid lead after final Montmartre ascent, but the well-organized chase of Decathlon CMA CGM quickly whittled down their advantage in last five kilometers.
"I actually thought it was over," he said. "With 500 metres to go, I thought I had nothing left to lose. I put my head down and rode as hard as possible towards the finish."
