The Vuelta a España took the spotlight on the day, but across the Atlantic, UAE Team Emirates - XRG dominated the GP de Montréal from start to finish. Brandon McNulty took the victory after a long-range attack together with Tadej Pogacar, with the duo taking the win with ease and no competition in the final kilometers.
The race started off with a breakaway of Artem Schmidt, Jorgen Nordhagen, Andrew August, Victor Lafay, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Frank van den Broek and Embret Svestad-Bardseng. Later on they were joined by Mauro Schmid, Laurence Pithie, Jan Tratnik, Gianni Vermeersch, Lewis Askey, Alex Baudin, Harry Sweeny, Fredrik Dversnes and Marius Mayrhofer.
Most would expect the 15-rider group to thrive and even have a chance to surprise on the day in a regular race, with a lot of quality present, but ultimatelt UAE Team Emirates took control of the race and the work alone of Nils Politt, Tim Wellens and Pavel Sivakov closed down all of the attackers with still 69 kilometers to go. Shortly after some of the favourites such as Julian Alaphilippe and Wout van Aert were already getting dropped, whilst many others abandoned the race due to the incredibly high pace that had been set all day long.
UAE played with the competition, entering the penultimate ascent in front and having Brandon McNulty attack, joined by Quinn Simmons. On Mont Royal Tadej Pogacar attacked from the chasing group, linking up with the front two, and going solo shortly after. McNulty seized the work of Simmons and then attacked, with Pogacar waiting for the American. The two connected still before entering the final lap, with a celebratory lap following where no-one was remotely close to making the catch. Quinn Simmons resisted to finish third on the day.
