Jonas Vingegaard undergoes surgery on collapsed lung after crash at Itzulia Basque Country

After a horrific crash on the descent of the Olaeta climb on stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country took out several of the pre-race favourites, including reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider has now undergone surgery after suffering a fractured collarbone, broken ribs and a collapsed lung as a result of the crash.

According to Spanish news outlet Marca, the surgery took place at the Txagorritxu hospital in Vitoria in the Basque Country, with the collapsed lung taking priority and thus being operated on first. Vingegaard is still in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Also involved in the crash was the likes of Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel, with the Belgian rider also suffering a broken collarbone, for which he successfully underwent surgery and has subsequently been discharged from hospital. Roglič also suffered several severe abrasions, but escaped the crash without any fractures or major injuries.
