Jonas Vingegaard was one of the big revelations of the 2021 season and this year he finds himself with the task of cementing his place in the
Jumbo-Visma lineup, a hard task for any rider. His start to the season though, where he is having pressure and responsibility of leading the team, are very favourable.
“I’m happy and proud to be on the podium of
Tirreno-Adriatico. It’s a big race. I was unhappy about my time trial, but that didn’t prove decisive for my final classification," Vingegaard said. After starting off his season well winning the Drôme Classic in his second day of racing, Vingegaard found himself disappointed with his performance in the initial time-trial of the race, but bounced back to finish strong on the two hilly stages that anteceded the colossal Monte Carpegna stage that would come in the weekend.
On the queen stage, where he needed to perform the most, Vingegaard showed no signs of weakness. Albeit not being able to follow eventual stage winner Tadej Pogacar, Vingegaard went on to be the closes chaser alongside Mikel Landa, and managed to secure a strong runner-up spot in the overall classification just as the Tour de France last year. "This time the pressure of the team was on my shoulders, so I’m happy to have shown that I can perform well under those circumstances," he concluded.
Vingegaard is set to take to the start of GP de Denain this week as preparation for the upcoming France where Jumbo - Visma will once again attempt to take the title they've been fighting for in the last few years, before focusing on Itzulia Basque Country and the Ardennes classics to wrap off his spring campaign.
