Jai Hindley: "In the end it wasn’t possible to shake off Carapaz and Landa"

Jai Hindley is still putting on the pressure on his rivals at the Giro d'Italia, as he rode to another very strong performance on stage 16 and got himself an extra four seconds closer to the lead of Richard Carapaz.

The leader of BORA - hansgrohe is on extraordinary form, and has detailed the very sharp start to the day with the most climbing on this year's editions: "In the beginning, Emu and I rode relatively conservatively in the peloton and tried to stay out of trouble." On the Passo dello Mortirolo Astana Qazaqstan Team put the pedal to the metal on the peloton, a vicious set of efforts that suited Hindley well towards the final ascent.

"On the second to last climb Bahrain Victorious took control in the reduced peloton and the pace became faster and faster, especially over the last kilometres of the climb. I felt really good at that point and tried to launch a few attacks, but in the end it wasn’t possible to shake off Carapaz and Landa," he added.

Hindley responded to the attacks of Landa and Carapaz, put in some little accelerations, but the trio was equally balanced and rode into the line in Aprica together. In another impressive sprint, Hindley topped Carapaz to take four seconds in bonus seconds which put him closer to the pink jersey.

In the days ahead Hindley will have more opportunities, as there will still be several high mountain stages which can be chaotic. "Overall it was a good day, I gained four bonus seconds and now I'm only three seconds behind Carapaz in the GC. So like I said, a really good day," the Australian concluded.
