After a slow start to his career at Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team, Sam Bennett has well and truly arrived now. Continuing to impress at 4 Jours de Dunkerque, the Irish sprinter has took his third win in four days on Saturday afternoon.
“My teammates made my life a lot easier today," reflected the 33-year-old afterwards, continuing the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team's incredibly successful start to the 2024 campaign. "I didn't have to think about strategy, they did the work for me. I just had to manage the last five hundred meters well, so this victory is above all for my teammates."
In the five stages so far at 4 Jours de Dunkerque, Bennett has three victories, one runner-up finish and one third-placed finish. If the Irishman can continue this form on what is expected to be another bunch sprint on stage 6, he will cap off the week with an incredible general classification victory. Heading into stage 6, Bennett leads the GC by 28 seconds from Paul Penhoet.
"Normally, in a mass sprint, you always have to watch out for the riders coming from behind, this was a very different configuration. I knew that we had to be placed four hundred meters at the turn on the left, at that moment it is very difficult to come back from behind. I just tried to hold on afterward, but I had to throw first," Bennett concludes. "We'll see tomorrow if I still have any legs left, but it's already a very good week."
