Mauro Schmid has been hunting for a stage win throughout the
Giro d'Italia, and today in the penultimate day in the Alps it seemed as if the Swiss had his chance. However, his second place came as a huge disappointing after a difficult situation right before the line.
Schmid made it into the breakaway together with Davide Ballerini, and in the ascent to Kolovrat he rode comfortably in the leading group which got shortened in the gradients of the Slovenian climb. It was all to play out in the final climb, where the breakaway riders controlled themselves and went into the spring together.
In the wheel of Koen Bouwman into the final corner, he was forced to break and went towards the barriers together with several other riders in the group. “In my opinion it was not a fair sprint, that was clear. My handlebars were still in front of his when entering the bend. He nearly fell around the bend. He knows he is slower in the sprint and pushed me away," he said, accusing the stage winner of an unfair sprint.
“When you see the last hundred meters, you see that I can't help it. Whether there should be a disqualification? I'm not sure, but in my view it was really not fair," he added.
With the two final stages featuring high mountains and an individual time-trial, it is unlikely that Schmid will be able to find himself once again in a position to take a stage win, and he'll go back home without success during his second Grand Tour.
“A major disappointment. With a second place you are the first loser. So I'm not happy about that. I think I had the legs to win, so of course I'm disappointed," he concluded.
