There was a time when
Edward Theuns seemed like he could become a leader himself in the Classics, especially when he joined Trek-Segafredo (now
Lidl-Trek) in 2016. But eventually, his career took a different path and the 34-year-old Belgian is now being valued for his role in Jonathan Milan's sprint train, as well as that of a domestique ready to play important roles deep into the Flemish Classics. But one shouldn't underestimate Theuns when given a freedom to ride for his own result, as evidenced by his victory at the Bredene Koksijde Classic. Of course the American team wouldn't let such a rider go and agreed to a two-year contract extension.
"My best memories over the last years have been celebrating victories together with the Team - those moments are always special," said
Edward Theuns. "Winning the Bredene Classic this year was particularly meaningful. I don’t often get many chances for myself, but that rare opportunity made the victory even more special.
"Another highlight has been working with Simone and Jonny in the leadouts. It feels like the second part of my career, where all the experience I’ve built is now coming together in this role. Racing with them is a joy - they’re not only great riders but also great people, and the fun we share on the road makes those moments unforgettable.
