INEOS Grenadiers have talked about the internal debate that revolves around the Tour de France and the team's ambitions into it. Although much was left out, Rod Ellingworth has given some indications towards the current mindset within the team.

"Adam Yates will defend the overall classification aspirations of INEOS Grenadiers at the Tour de France and Filippo Ganna has the opening time-trial as an objective aswell as the yellow jersey in Copenhagen," team coach Rod Ellingworth told Cyclingnews. After Egan Bernal's accident, the team lost it's leader on paper for the Grand Boucle but that doesn't mean the team will have reduced ambitious going into it. Filippo Ganna will be making his debut in the race with his eyes on an early yellow jersey, and within INEOS the plan also seems to be focusing on Adam Yates' GC aspirations.

"He will go with the goal of improving his fourth place at the 2016 Tour and we will work to achieve it. He's ambitious and he wants it, so he will go to the Tour with the team at his disposal," Ellingworth added.

Yates has finished the UAE Tour in second place after being the only rider capable of challenging Tadej Pogacar in the mountains. At Paris-Nice he didn't have the same legs, however still finished a strong fourth place, behind teammate Daniel Martínez. Although not mentioned, it is expected that Daniel Martínez - and possibly Pavel Sivakov - will be at the Tour with co-leadership status. The Colombian specially, is a proven Grand Tour contender and is showing the form required to be in the fight for the podium too.

As for the rumours that Richard Carapaz could change his plans and head to France in the summer to replace Egan Bernal who is likely to miss the race due to injuries, he was quick to dismiss them: "We will keep Richard Carapaz at the Giro d'Italia. It's a race that suits Richard and for that we want him to focus in it."
