INEOS Grenadiers have came to the Giro d'Italia with perhaps the biggest favourite to the overall classification win, Richard Carapaz, and they have not shied away from working in the mountainous stages, despite the ongoing lead of Juan Pedro López and Trek - Segafredo.
Matteo Tosatto, INEOS' DS at the race, has spoken to Cyclingnews ahead of the 14th stage where the peloton will be riding through the tough hills east of Torino - and afterwards the first Alpine stage, to Cogne. “They’re two very important stages and two very different stages that could combine to make Sunday especially difficult. They’re important but they won’t decide the Giro. But they will give it a kick and a shake," he said.
"Saturday’s stage is like a Classic, it’s a mountain stage in the city and very technical, where everyone will fight to be up front to stay safe," Tosatto pointed out. INEOS have taken responsability in all three mountainous stages so far in the race, but they have also tried to surprise on stage ten to Jesi where Carapaz tried to join the large breakaway that went on to be successful.
The Ecuadorian is a very unpredictable rider, but also one that thrives on all terrains. His consistency so far in the race has him in first position between the pre-race favourites, however without the need to spend the team's reserves as Trek - Segafredo has lead the race since the peloton has been in Sicily.
In Mount Etna and Potenza INEOS have controlled the race, in what is a clear preference of leading the race from the front. Tosatto is keen on the strategy, and the team is looking to take the pink jersey this weekend. “We’ll be happy to take the maglia rosa whenever we can. We’re not scared of the responsibility of race leadership and so why not take the maglia rosa with a great ride this weekend?" Tosatto concluded.
