BORA-hansgrohe is heading to the Vuelta a España with a strong selection that features experienced leader Aleksandr Vlasov, supertalent Cian Uijtdebroeks, Sergio Higuita or Emmanuel Buchmann. The German team organised a short online press conference before the race where their riders spoke about their ambitions for upcoming three weeks.
On paper, the 27-year-old Russian seems to be the most advanced BORA-hansgrohe pawn in the battle for the general classification. That image is actually confirmed during the press conference: when asked about his ambitions, he answers shortly. "I'll only be satisfied with a podium finish."
Vlasov, whose best result in the Vuelta a España is eleventh from 2020, however appears to start with a little pressure. "I don't really feel any pressure at all. After my DNF in the Giro I took a short rest. After that I was able to train well. I have completed most of my training at altitude. I think that paid off, as I showed good results at Clasica San Sebastián and Vuelta a Burgos. Hopefully I can continue that good form and compete for a podium place at Vuelta."
However Vlasov's leading role might not be as certain as it may seems. Young Uijtedbroeks might not have the Russian's experience, however if he proves that he can compete against the best, the leadership might quickly change.
