Having re-signed for a further two years with the
INEOS Grenadiers,
Geraint Thomas is keen to ensure he makes the most of what most likely will be his final-ever professional contract.
One of the key targets for the Welshman will be the Paris 2024
Olympic Games. It will be the fifth Olympics for Thomas and with two gold medals already under his belt, the 37-year-old is eyeing more success next summer. “Why not? I’m still riding well,” he tells The Guardian.
Despite his age, Thomas has still proven he more than has the legs to compete at the highest level. "Finished on the podium in four out of my last six completed Grand Tours,” he notes. “So I still feel I’ve got it. Looking at the [2024] Giro course there are two long TTs, a gravel day and a hard last week as always. So it’s definitely an option. Obviously, the Olympics will be a big hit as well for myself. I’d love to go there and make it to five Olympics which is mad.”
"The hardest bit for me is time away. But, in the grand scheme of things, it’s two more years and then I’ve got the rest of my life to be at home," he concludes, revealing he's had discussions with his wife Sara about whether or not re-signing for two further years was right, given the fact his young family are settled in Monaco. "So we decided to keep going.”
