Sam Welsford had a cracking day at the Tour Down Under, but in the end all turned alright. He crashed right at the start of the stage suffering a lot of road rash, and was also dropped on the final ascent. Still, he overcame those obstacles and sprinted to victory in the ochre jersey.
"I was already on the ground after five kilometers, that was not ideal. Furthermore, it was a difficult day. The breakaway was caught early and then it became very nervous," the Australian said in a post-race interview. It was a fall that involved several other riders and saw him suffer some road rash and ripped clothes.
"Not too bad. I have had it worse. I have just recovered on the left side, from a crash during the national championships, but now it is my right side’s turn. At least I have brought it back into balance a bit," he could even joke.
On the final ascent of Menglers Hill the pace was pushed by a few riders trying to get away, and Welsford was dropped close to the summit, struggling with the pace. But the team stood by his side and worked to bring the Australian back to the peloton, in time to still position themselves for the bunch sprint.
"On the last climb I was really at my limit, that was very tough," he admits. "But I had the team around me the whole climb, so we stayed calm and did a good job to get over the top. There were a lot of attacks then. I hoped that everything would come together again on the descent and fortunately that happened".
"The boys remained patient, because we knew it was a long and difficult sprint. Also because of the wind. I did take the lead a bit early, but the team did a great job," he concluded. Danny van Poppel had another perfect leadout, although this one earned him a yellow card due to blocking Welsford's rivals, but the team's head sprinter rode to a comfortable win.
