After a nightmare couple of years that has seen former Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner Egan Bernal come close to death after a horror crash and miss numerous races due to subsequent injuries, the Colombian is staying upbeat. After all, there are more important things in life than winning.
"I'm very excited and I want to do my best," says the 26-year-old INEOS Grenadiers rider, currently at the Tour de Romandie. “It's very beautiful here I've already raced twice in Switzerland, for Romandie and for the Tour de Suisse. Both races went well for me: I brought home excellent results. Switzerland is a special country in Europe."
Now though however, Bernal admits he has a different view on his career since his near-death experience. "It is a very long process, with many ups and downs, but it is a great motivation," Bernal says of his road to recovery. "Beyond winning or losing or the end result, I want to show that we can overcome life's obstacles and that it's more important than winning a cycling race."
Whilst it's true that the levels of performance from Bernal aren't at the same highs he showed prior to his crash, as he has said himself in a previous interview. "I have already won the race for life."
