After the reassuring images of Jonas Vingegaard back on his bike gave hope of his participation in the upcoming Tour de France on Tuesday, former Maillot Jaune Alberto Contador has given his opinion on the matter to Eurosport.
The two-time winner of the Tour de France, now a commentator on the aforementioned channel and owner of Team Polti Kometa, is certain that the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader will be able to be at the start of the Tour de France 2024. The Spaniard isn't so sure about what the physical state of the Dane will be at the Grand Depart however.
"I think Jonas is an extra challenge and just as Tadej made the effort last year to be there, we don't know if Vingegaard is going to do the same, it's complicated to analyze him well because we don't know how much he is damaged, how long he has been stopped, if he has been able to at least walk a little bit to maintain himself a little bit," Contador says.
"In terms of weight we see him well, which is what we can analyze and I think he will be at the start of the Tour de France," the Spaniard concludes. "Maybe not with the guarantees of other years, but I think he will be at the start."
