Reassuring update for Biniam Girmay following crash-enforced Giro d'Italia abandon

Crashing twice in a matter of moments on stage 4 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia, Biniam Girmay's race was cruelly brought to a premature conclusion as he left the race in the back of an ambulance.

Whilst it's still too early to get a full overview of the 24-year-old Eritrean's condition following the crash, Intermarché - Wanty have released what they described as a "reassuring" update for their team leader after his forced abandon.

“After two crashes, Biniam Girmay was taken to hospital to carry out in-depth examinations in order to make a precise diagnosis and detect possible injuries," updates Intermarché - Wanty's team doctor, Fabien Cardinale in an official press release. "We will know all detailed results in the next days. Biniam is now reunited with the team and can count on the moral support of all his teammates and the staff for his recovery.”

Girmay made history in his only previous Giro d'Italia appearance, becoming the first black African to win a Grand Tour stage back in 2022. At that edition of the opening Grand Tour of the season, Girmay too was forced to abandon as the Eritrean was the victim of a rogue champagne cork to the eye.
