Friday, 28th February marks not just the last day of the month, but the end of Eurosport in the UK. At 02:00 GMT, the channel was officially absorbed into Warner Bros Discovery’s TNT Sports network, signalling a major shift for British cycling fans.
For cycling fans, it’s the end of an era, and an expensive one too! British viewers who were paying £6.99 a month to watch their favourite sport will now face a steep increase to £30.99 per month. Ouch.
For those willing to pay the extra cost, TNT Sports promises
an expanded cycling package. More than 1,000 live cycling broadcasts and 2,500
hours of racing will be shown via Discovery+, including every race of the men’s
and women’s WorldTours.
Additionally, a new programme, The Ultimate Cycling Show, is
set to debut. Free-to-air highlight shows for the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a
Espana will be available, while ITV retains the rights to the Tour de France
for one last year in 2025.
Scott Young, a spokesperson for WBD Sports Europe,
reaffirmed the company's commitment to cycling in a press release, “Our
commitment to cycling has no boundaries, and we will continue to deliver
further investment to elevate the fan experience across linear, streaming and
digital."
"Our approach to the 2025 season continues our mission
to shine a light on every aspect of this epic sport, from the world’s greatest male and female
riders to the stories from the passionate people at grassroots level keeping
this industry spinning."
Young emphasised that live coverage would be at an unprecedented level, "Our live race coverage is unprecedented, broadcasting 100% of the men’s and women’s UCI World Tours for the first time ever.
“The Ultimate Cycling Show will serve as the perfect story-telling platform across the season with engaging analysis, discussion and content formats. Its free-to-air access will ensure a broader audience reach, whilst satisfying the seasoned viewer and attracting new fans. We will have an enriched digital operation with upscaled presence at key races, providing added depth and insight to the experience."
horror! I hope eurosport continues as it is now in continental Europe
Price gouging, plain and simple. Just another nail in the coffin of UK cycling. You have to feel for the athletes who are out there trying to inspire the next generations, unfortunately less and less people will be reached as we are priced out and the sport will suffer.
So, watching today's TT at Gran Camino at the moment on my new TNT sub. ( I took the £15 p/m deal for 7 months) But... there's also now ads every 15 minutes or so during the live coverage!! This is outrageous and I shall be cancelling for real now. What a shame... I would have easily continued for the next season, but the ads during the live stream are unforgiveable.
That's disappointing. I was planning to take a months sub for the Giro and see how it went. Adverts though? I don't get that we should pay and have to sit through adverts. Greedy ba****rds!!!!
