After a first show of weakness on stage 16,
Isaac del Toro has emphatically responded to any doubts regarding his
Giro d'Italia winning capabilities by taking a stunning win on stage 17, tightening his grip on the Maglia Rosa in the process.
Taking the first Grand Tour stage win of his burgeoning career, the 21-year-old Mexican attacked clear of all his GC rivals bar
Richard Carapaz on the final climb of the day, then gapped the former Giro d'Italia winner in a thrilling run in to the line. For Carapaz, although he ended the day without another stage win, or having gained any time in the Maglia Rosa battle, the Ecuadorian does move up to 2nd in the GC (+41), leapfrogging Team Visma | Lease a Bike's leader
Simon Yates (+51).
Derek Gee (+1:57),
Damiano Caruso (+3:06) and
Egan Bernal (+4:43) retain the same places at the start of the day, although the latter is now nearly five minutes down after more time loss on stage 17. Then, rounding out the top 10,
Giulio Pellizzari is up 2 places to 7th at +5:02, before
Einer Rubio (+6:09),
Adam Yates (+7:45) and
Michael Storer (+7:46) complete the top 10.
