Widely anticipated,
Geraint Thomas should indeed take on a management role with
INEOS Grenadiers after his professional career comes to a wrap, according to recent reports.
"We'd be crazy not to think about Geraint being part of the team in the future," Head of Performance Scott Drawer confirmed to
Cyclingnews earlier this month. "Geraint's got unique skills that we don't have. We'd like to tap into what Geraint knows. He's got huge respect and credibility in the sport. He's the current team captain and plays a big role in that."
Geraint Thomas made his professional debut with Barloworld back in 2007, but from 2010 onwards, his career became fatefully connected with that of then brand new project Sky ProCycling that later evolved into the current INEOS Grenadiers. Thomas wasn't part of when the British team wrote history as Bradley Wiggins became the first UK Tour de France champion in 2012, but later he would go on to leave his own mark in the history of the Grande Boucle.
First as a member of the iconic Sky train that brought four Tour titles for Chris Froome, Thomas later successfully stepped in for his leader in 2018 and snatched the victory out of the hands of Tom Dumoulin. The next year, he sacrificed his ambition to win the Tour in favor of younger Egan Bernal and despite several more podiums, he'll retire at the end of the season with one Grand Tour title under his belt.
After 16 seasons with the British formation, it would be hard to imagine the Welshman to represent any other team in the peloton than INEOS. That's why it is only logical than after his racing career is over, he'd take on a role in the team's management - a smooth transition from his role of a mentor and a road captain.
"I love cycling and the team, so would love to stay involved in some capacity," Thomas recently told The Guardian when asked about a new role for 2026. "I think I’ve got a lot to offer on performance and going after bike races. There’d be a lot to learn as well, which is also exciting. It all depends on the role I’d end up doing, but that’s the type of challenge I’d be looking for."
At the moment it's not known what would be the exact responsibilities of Thomas within the formation. Colleagues from
Escap Collectie expect that we'll learn more towards the end of this season.
