AG2R Citroën Team made a bold move some years ago to hire Geoffrey Bouchard at 26 years of age straight off the amateur ranks, however he has proven to be one of the team's most successful climbers and today at the Tour of the Alps he has taken his first professional win, in style.
Bouchard has since turned pro won the mountains classifications at the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España. The Frenchman is a pure climbers and has shown this year to have the quality to ride among the best, finishing in the Top10 at the UAE Tour. Despite this, he was given freedom to attack early on in the day today, as he formed part of the six rider breakaway that ended up launching him to victory. “The six of us ride away on the flat, with a headwind. We took it easy," he said in a post-race interview.
As the strongest climber of the group, he went solo with 25 kilometers to go on the final categorized climb of the day, dropping BORA's Ben Zwiehoff and racing towards the line, in a move that seemed to be more and more complicated to succeed as the kilometers went by and the peloton drew closer and closer. Bouchard, alone, managed to keep his power output high until the finish, and despite the attacks coming in the final hilltop inside the last kilometers, he arrived at the finish in Primiero alone.
“I knew the finish. In the last circuit I had a lot of headwind. I kept pedaling and went full throttle on the small climb with four kilometers to go... Perfect," he added.
“I already did Tour of the Alps last year and had a lot of fun then... I'm going for a classification, because this year we have a good team with more strong riders," Bouchard concluded. Tomorrow will be his first test in the leader's jersey as he is set to head into a rough day in the mountains.
