Stage 20 is in the books and barring any small changes or final stage disasters, we have the general classification standings for the 2025 Vuelta a Espana. Heading into the penultimate stage, the big question was could Jonas Vingegaard keep the Red Jersey. The answer? An emphatic yes!
Sealing the overall victory in style, Vingegaard powered away from all his rivals on the brutal slopes of the Bola del Mundo with an attack from just outside the 1km to go marker. Despite the short distance between attack and finish line, the sheer ferocity of Vingegaard's attack meant that by the time he crossed the line he'd gained 11 seconds on nearest chaser Sepp Kuss and put in 23 seconds to his main Red Jersey rival Joao Almeida.
What the means for the GC standings is that Vingegaard now heads to Madrid with a commanding 1:16 lead at the top of the general classification, more than enough to allow the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader to enjoy the celebrations of a 3rd career Grand Tour win tomorrow.
Despite failing to complete an epic turnaround on the final climb, Almeida does secure 2nd overall, before Tom Pidcock, who impressed again on stage 20, completes the podium in a breakout ride for the double Olympic mountain bike champion. Jai Hindley put up a big fight on the Bola del Mundo, but ultimately Pidcock held firm, retaining a 30 second GC advantage over the Aussie.
Hindley's teammate Giulio Pellizzari however, was one of the big losers of the day as he cracked early on the final climb and that ultimately cost him the White Jersey of Best Young Rider with Israel - Premier Tech's talented American Matthew Riccitello rising to 5th overall and into the White Jersey at 5:55 down. Rounding out the top-10, Pellizzari is now 6th at 7:23 before Sepp Kuss (7:45), Felix Gall (7:50), Torstein Traeen (9:48) and Matteo Jorgenson (12:16).
