After six consecutive stages where the riders faced tough climbs late in the day and where the overall classification was played, stage 15 provided an opportunity for most to rest and end the second week in a more calm position. However one breakaway opportunist - surprisingly low number taking into consideration the predictions for the day - took advantage of his escapade to break directly into the Top10.
Stage 15 from Vegadeo to Monforte de Lemos was a difficult stage at the start but the peloton offered no resistance to those trying to form a breakaway. Over 40 riders formed part of this group, including Giulio Ciccone and Egan Bernal who gave up on GC the day prior, but have now won 13 minutes on the peloton which sees them back in 13th and 14th spots. However it was
William Junior Lecerf who really benefited from this move, gaining the same amount of time, but for him it had him leapfrog from 13th to 9th in the GC, taking full advantage of his underdog status to enter the real fight for the Vuelta GC.
Bahrain - Victorious are the team that worked the most behind, but Torstein Traeen lost his position to the Soudal - Quick-Step rider, and so did Matteo Jorgenson who fell out of the Top10 once again. At the top however no changes, as
Jonas Vingegaard enjoyed a smooth day at the top of the standings, going into the final week now with 48 seconds of lead over his most direct rival
João Almeida.
Tom Pidcock enters the final week of the Vuelta in third place, close to an incredible achievement, but he holds only 32 seconds over Jai Hindley and 52 over Felix Gall who remain major threats to the final podium. Giulio Pellizzari, Matthew Riccitello and Sepp Kuss maintained their sixth, seventh and eighth positions respectively!
