Chaos ruled once more at the
Vuelta a Espana. Stage 16 was neutralized with immediate effect after protests and road blocking on the final ascent to the Castro de Herville. The GC riders were heading towards the summit finish, with a high pace on the penultimate climb of the day, but the untimely decision meant that the few GC gaps created on the climb were the ones that stuck to the end of the stage.
Jonas Vingegaard hence remains in the GC with the same gap over
João Almeida.
A lot was expected of the final climb where hot GC action was expected, but cycling fans could not enjoy what was meant to be a striking ascent in the Galician hills. Egan Bernal took the stage win and with the stage neutralization, held on to the almost 6-minute gap which propels him to 12th in the overall classification, within 1:32 minutes of the Top10. Jonas Vingegaard remains in the race lead with João Almeida at 48 seconds of distance.
Tom Pidcock remains in third place 2:38 minutes away from the race lead, followed by Jai Hindley at 3:10 minutes from Vingegaard. The main rider to lose time today was Felix Gall who lost 54 seconds on the road - but perhaps the gap would've grown quite a lot more if the stage had gone all the way to the end.
So Giulio Pellizzari is now in fifth place 4:21 minutes back, 3 seconds ahead of Felix Gall, who leads Matthew Riccitello but an also thin 29 seconds. Sepp Kuss, Torstein Traeen and William Junior Lecerf complete the Top10, with the latter two switching positions after Bahrain's strong attack.
